Third Grade

Third Grade Teachers at West Salem STRIVE:

  • To provide our students with a nurturing environment that promotes learning by taking care to meet student’s individual learning needs through varied instruction.
  • To help our students transition from primary grades to upper elementary grades where more independence, organization, and studying are required.
  • To acclimate our students and families to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) testing process where students take their first SOL tests in Reading and Mathematics.
  • To continue the use of reading strategies gleaned in the primary grades and apply these skills to reading more advanced literature and chapter books.
  • To review necessary math standards such as the memorization of addition and subtraction facts as we build on these math skills and transition into multiplication and division.

Tips for home:

  • Have your child count, add, subtract, multiply, or divide any number you see in your home environment.  The more exposure a student has to numbers, the more naturally math facts and concepts will come also.
  • Have your child help you make dinner. You can make this task a teachable moment with interactions of reading directions, ingredients, measurement, etc.
  • Limit “screen time” (TV, game systems, tablets, handheld devices, etc.) during the school week so reading, school work, and getting a good night’s sleep remain a priority.
  • Communicate with your child and, in turn, with your child’s teacher. We would love to hear any particulars you think would be helpful information for us.

We would like to thank all our parents, grandparents, guardians, etc. for all your support and guidance at home throughout the school year.  We look forward to many adventures together.  Children are the greatest gift in life and we feel very blessed to be a part of their lives each year.  We look forward to many great adventures and working together as a team this year on our investment in the future.
